Between June and November 2024, we had the privilege of delivering a series of six powerful and transformative trainings as part of our Inclusion Lab project—an initiative proudly funded by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe. Designed specifically for young refugees living in Southwest Bulgaria, the project brought together 10 dedicated participants aged 15–19 who embarked on a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and active engagement.
Through this pilot initiative, we created a space where these young individuals could grow into leaders, gain essential life and career skills, and build strong foundations for meaningful participation in their communities. Each training module focused on a key area of development, helping to address both the challenges they face and the incredible potential they possess.
Starting with Confidence: Leadership and Empowerment
Our journey began in June with Training Module 1: “Lead Forward – Empowering Young Refugees for Community Leadership.” Over two impactful days, participants explored their own leadership potential, took part in team-building exercises, and reflected on what it means to lead with empathy and purpose. Many of them entered the training unsure of their abilities, but left with a stronger belief in themselves, ready to take initiative and inspire others.
This module played a foundational role in boosting their confidence, helping them recognize their strengths, and preparing them to take on active roles in their communities. Leadership is not just about standing in front—it’s about creating positive change, and our participants showed they were ready to do exactly that.
Facing Realities: Discrimination, Hate Speech, and Bullying
In July, we held Training Module 2, focusing on one of the more emotionally intense topics—Discrimination, Hate Speech, and Bullying. Many young refugees carry personal experiences of exclusion, and this module created a safe and supportive space where they could share, reflect, and find solidarity.
The group learned how to recognize and respond to different forms of discrimination. Through personal storytelling, role-playing, and guided discussions, they built resilience and learned practical coping strategies. Legal experts introduced them to their rights and ways to access support systems. The result was not only increased awareness but a deeper sense of empowerment and connection among participants.
Healing and Resilience: Mental Health and Wellbeing
Later in August, we turned our focus inward with Training Module 3: “Mind Matters – Nurturing Mental Health and Resilience.” Mental health is often a neglected topic among displaced youth, yet it plays a crucial role in their ability to thrive.
This module introduced participants to the basics of mental health and emotional wellbeing. They explored mindfulness, practiced breathing techniques, and participated in group discussions that helped normalize conversations around stress, trauma, and anxiety. Peer support activities allowed them to connect on a deeper level, while self-care workshops gave them practical tools to integrate into daily life. The experience was both healing and empowering.
Finding a Voice: Civic Engagement and Active Citizenship
In September, we held Training Module 4: “Active Voices – Youth Civic Engagement for Positive Change.” This module invited participants to look outward—to their neighborhoods, communities, and the societies they are part of.
Over two engaging days, they learned about civic rights, democratic participation, and how to get involved in community initiatives. Each participant designed a small civic engagement project, tailored to issues they care about. They also met with representatives from local organizations and discovered how volunteering and advocacy can be powerful tools for integration and impact. This module helped participants realize that their voices matter—and that they have the power to make a difference.
Paving a Path: Career Planning and Employability
October brought a more practical focus with Training Module 5: “Career Pathways – Navigating the Road to Employment Success.” This module equipped participants with the tools and confidence needed to enter the job market and plan their futures.
They created professional CVs, learned job interview techniques, and explored their talents and aspirations through interactive sessions. Special attention was given to understanding the Bulgarian labor market and the opportunities available for young refugees. The module also focused on building a personal brand and presenting oneself with confidence—skills that will serve them well whether they seek employment, internships, or further education.
Thinking Big: Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Our training journey concluded in November with Training Module 6: “Entrepreneurial Horizons – Empowering Young Refugees in Business Innovation.” This final session aimed to spark creativity and provide participants with the tools to think like entrepreneurs.
Each participant developed and pitched a business idea, learning the basics of entrepreneurship—from business planning and market research to branding and presentation. They discovered support programs such as Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs and discussed how business innovation can be a pathway not just to economic empowerment but also to community change. Many left this session inspired to continue working on their ideas and explore entrepreneurship as a real and exciting possibility.
